How to Get to Khao Lak & the Similan Islands

If you’ve seen those dreamy photos of turquoise water, white sand, and schools of fish that look like confetti, chances are you’ve stumbled across the Similan Islands. The only question left is: how do you actually get there? Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think.

Step 1: Fly into Phuket

First stop: Phuket International Airport (HKT). This is your main gateway to Khao Lak where all the trips to the Similans start, and lucky for you, Phuket is one of the most well-connected airports in Thailand. There are tons of direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and even Europe during high season.

Once you’ve landed, resist the urge to head straight to the nearest beach bar, you’re only about 1.5 to 2 hours away from Khao Lak by car.

From Thap Lamu Pier, it’s about 70 km (1.5–2 hours by speedboat) to reach the Similan Islands. You can visit on:
