When is the Best Season to Visit Komodo?
When to Go for Travel and Diving
Komodo National Park is a year-round destination, but depending on what you want to see and do, some months hit harder than others. Whether you’re here for dragons, diving, manta encounters or just unreal island views, timing matters a little. Here’s the honest breakdown.

Komodo Seasons at a Glance
Dry Season: April to November
This is peak Komodo and for good reason.
What it’s like:
- Sunny days
- Calm seas (most of the time)
- Clear visibility underwater
- Perfect conditions for island hopping and viewpoints
This is the best time for first-time visitors and anyone who wants that postcard Komodo experience.

Best Time for Traveling in Komodo
April to June
If you want great weather without peak-season chaos, this is your sweet spot.
- Lush green hills
- Fewer crowds
- Comfortable temperatures
- Excellent conditions for hiking and boat trips
Komodo looks extra dramatic during these months. Think green islands instead of beige moonscapes.

July to September
High season and peak popularity.
- Dry, sunny, very little rain
- Best conditions for viewpoints like Padar
- Busier boats and higher prices
Still worth it. Just book ahead and embrace sharing sunsets with new friends.

October to November
An underrated favorite.
- Warm water
- Fewer tourists
- Calm seas
- Great visibility
If Komodo had a “locals know” season, this would be it.

Best Time for Diving in Komodo
Komodo diving is world class all year, but different seasons bring different highlights.
April to November: Prime Diving Season
- Visibility: often 20 to 30 meters
- Strong currents = healthy reefs and big fish
- Cooler water in the south, warmer in the north
This is when Komodo really shows off. You can either go on a short day trip or explore more on our liveaboards.

Manta Season: December to March (and beyond)
Mantas are around all year, but sightings peak during the wetter months.
- More plankton = more mantas
- Water is warmer
- Visibility can be lower but the action is wild
If mantas are at the top of your bucket list, this is your window.

Rainy Season: December to March
Often misunderstood and unfairly avoided.
What it’s actually like:
- Short tropical showers
- Fewer boats and tourists
- Greener landscapes returning
- Excellent manta encounters
Diving is still very much happening, especially in the central and northern sites. If you are unlucky, some boats might get cancelled because of bad weather. Some southern sites may be limited due to swell, but there’s always a plan B.

So… When Is the Best Time to Go?
Best overall travel experience: April to June
Best diving conditions: April to November
Best manta encounters: December to March
Fewer crowds and good value: October to November and February
Honestly? Komodo doesn’t really have an off season. It just shifts personality.
Final Thoughts
Komodo is one of those rare places where timing fine-tunes the experience but never ruins it. Whether you come for dragons on land or giants underwater, there’s always something epic waiting.
Pro tip: Book liveaboards in advance! Especially if you want to go during peak season!
