The Best Dive Sites in Koh Tao and Why You’ll Fall in Love With Them
Koh Tao may be famous for turning backpackers into scuba addicts but its real magic happens underwater. Sure the beaches are cute and the sunsets look like someone turned the saturation to maximum but the dive sites are the real show stealers. If you already have your certification and want to see the island at its absolute best these three sites are the holy trinity.

Chumphon Pinnacle
If dive sites had fan clubs this one would have a waiting list. Chumphon is a massive submerged granite pinnacle covered in anemones and the occasional pair of bannerfish that look like they’re gossiping about you.
Here you can spot huge schools of trevally giant groupers, the occasional visiting whale shark and enough barracudas to make you rethink your place on the food chain. The vibe is big blue open water and lots of action. It’s a bucket list dive for good reason.

Southwest Pinnacle
If Chumphon is the dramatic deep ocean celebrity Southwest is its cool free spirited cousin. This site is made up of a cluster of pinnacles covered in soft corals, sea fans and the kind of marine life that makes photographers start screaming excitedly into their regulators.
Expect big schools of fusiliers, batfish that think they should be on camera and sometimes turtles cruising by like they own the place. Southwest is colorful, full of life and always a crowd pleaser.

Sail Rock
Now for the superstar. Sail Rock is one of the best dive sites in the entire Gulf of Thailand and she knows it. The famous vertical chimney swim through is the highlight but the whole site is buzzing with life.
You’ll find big schools of fish circling like underwater tornadoes plus queenfish trevally and sometimes the big friendly spotty one everyone secretly hopes for. The visibility often surprises you in a very good way.
