How to Get to Labuan Bajo and Komodo

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park, home of dragons, manta rays, ridiculous sunsets and some of the best diving on the planet. Getting there is easier than people think, but it does require a bit of planning. Here’s the simple breakdown, minus the confusion and travel forum panic.
Step 1: Get to Indonesia
If you’re coming from overseas, your first stop will almost always be Bali (Denpasar – DPS) or Jakarta (CGK).
Bali is the most popular option and honestly the most chill. Tons of international flights, great connections and a solid excuse to eat nasi goreng for a few days before heading east.
Step 2: Fly to Labuan Bajo (LBJ)
Labuan Bajo has its own airport called Komodo International Airport (LBJ).
From Bali to Labuan Bajo
This is the most common route.
- Flight time: about 1 hour
- Airlines: Wings Air, Batik Air, AirAsia, Citilink
- Multiple daily flights
From Jakarta to Labuan Bajo
- Flight time: about 2.5 hours
- Some direct flights available, others via Bali
Pro tip: Morning flights are your friend. Afternoon flights love to be delayed just enough to mess with your sunset plans.
Step 3: Arriving in Labuan Bajo
The airport is small, easy and about 10 minutes from town.
Taxis are available outside or your hotel or dive shop can usually arrange pickup.
Labuan Bajo itself is small. Most hotels, restaurants, dive centers and the harbor are all within a short drive.
Alternative Routes (For the Adventurous Souls)
By boat from Lombok or Bali
This is more of a journey than transport. Multi-day boat trips stop at islands like Moyo, Satonda and Padar along the way. Expect epic scenery, dolphins, stars and very basic comfort. Usually you will only have thin mattresses on the floor in a big room with everyone.
Perfect if you have time and patience. Not ideal if you get seasick or need a proper mattress to function.
From Flores overland
If you’re already on Flores, you can reach Labuan Bajo by bus or private car. The views are stunning. The roads are… character building.
Getting to Komodo National Park
Once you’re in Labuan Bajo, you don’t go to Komodo by land. Dragons don’t do roads.
You’ll head out by boat:
- Day trips for Diving or Snorkeling
- Liveaboards for Diving or a Multi day Snorkeling tour
- Private charters
Most boats leave directly from Labuan Bajo harbor and take you to Komodo Island, Rinca, Padar and surrounding dive sites.
Final Tips Before You Go
- Book flights early in high season
- If you want to go on a liveaboard, book a few months in advance! The boats fill up quickly. Day-trips to Komodo are a little easier to book last minute.
